HOURS HAD PASSED, and Alex was still grinning and practically jumping around Matthew. The professional archaeologist had been replaced by a college cheerleader, and it was a sad display. But Matthew seemed to be lapping it up. Then again, why wouldn’t he? Alex was a beautiful and intelligent woman.

“When we get to the surface, what are you going to do first?” Alex asked Matthew.

“I’m going to bow down to the sun,” he said.

“What about you, Robyn?” Alex looked straight at her.

“Me?” Robyn glanced at Matthew, who was smiling. “I’m going to celebrate. Yep, that’s what I’m going to do.” She wished the celebration could involve Matthew on a more personal level. Man, she had to pull herself together. They’d been there, done that.

“Well, we’re all going to celebrate,” Alex said. “Anything in particular?”

“Eat steak,” Robyn offered pithily. Alex’s face hardened. “I mean, steak’s good,” Robyn tossed out, hoping to somehow gloss over her eat steak comment. Responsibly, the first thing she should do was find a way to reach her boss and explain to him why she’d been incommunicado.

“And let’s not forget champagne.” Alex pranced in a circle around Matthew. His eyes were glued to her the entire time.

Gah! Watching them flirt was sickening.

The instant the thought laced through her, the guilt slammed into her. She should be happy for him. After all, they were friends. They traveled the world and uncovered legends together—that was a solid basis for a forever relationship, not romance. Besides, dating and going on quests together would affect their objectivity. There were times when tough decisions needed to be made, and if they were involved romantically, the right choice could be even more difficult to make. No, it was just best that she kept her feelings about Matthew to herself and let him go. That would be the show of real love for him.

But there was a niggling feeling in Robyn’s gut. She wasn’t sure if she questioned Alex’s character or if it was just the fact that she wasn’t ready to give herself over to reveling in a rescue just yet. “I have a question about the radio transmitter,” she said.

“Shoot,” Alex said.

“Does it give off our exact location? Or is it more of an approximate range?” Verbalizing her doubts and concerns turned her stomach. She wanted out of here just as much as the rest of them, but there was a part of her that was a realist. She’d fully give herself over to elation once she saw the light of day.

“It’s supposed to provide an exact location.”

Supposed to…

That assurance didn’t settle well. Enough had happened to them already, and while Robyn prided herself on staying positive, she was struggling right now.

“I can tell you’re worried,” Alex began, “but Jeff’s going to get us out of here.”

“You have a lot of confidence,” Jasper interjected. Robyn turned to look at him. He had been relatively quiet since Jeff’s voice had come over the radio.

Alex arched her brows and crossed her arms. “Is there
